The module “AI Methods in Academia” introduces students to the fundamentals and application possibilities of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in the university context. They learn to analyze and evaluate AI-powered tools for research, text production, and data analysis, as well as to develop strategies for the privacy-compliant and sustainable use of AI in their studies. Through the application of AI tools and reflection on their use, students are enabled to purposefully employ AI methods to support academic tasks. The module concludes with the creation of a report in which students present and reflect on their experiences and insights gained from applying AI methods in everyday university life.

  • No skills/knowledge is required
  • Basic coding experience is recommended

Students…

  • analyze the functions, potentials, and limitations of AI-powered tools for research, text production, and data analysis.
  • evaluate the impact of AI on scientific work practices and quality standards.
  • develop strategies for the privacy-compliant and sustainable use of AI in academic studies.
  • use AI tools purposefully to support academic tasks and critically reflect on their application.
  • take responsibility for an ethically sound and responsible use of AI in their academic life.

The exam consists of an individual written report (max. 10 pages) based on students' experiences and reflections.

The report includes:

  • Description of how AI methods were applied in academic settings
  • Analysis of process changes and integrations
  • Evaluation of benefits and challenges
  • Critical reflection on individual and institutional impact
  • Exploration of potential use cases and perspectives
